What are Unity and Unreal, and which is better for VR?

Unity and Unreal Engine are two development platforms for virtual reality (VR). Unity is especially well suited to mobile VR headsets and quick prototypes, Unreal to photorealistic high-end projects on PCs. In the end, the deciding factor is which engine the development team knows best.
Unity and Unreal Engine are two of the best-known and most widely used development platforms for VR and other interactive 3D applications. Both offer powerful tools, but they take different approaches, and each is better suited to certain use cases.
1. Unity
Unity is known for its ease of use and flexibility. It is often used for mobile VR projects and smaller applications because it needs fewer system resources and offers a large selection of plugins. Unity also has a huge developer community and many tutorials, which makes it particularly attractive for beginners and smaller teams. It supports a wide range of devices, including Meta Quest, HTC Vive and many others. In our experience, Unity is the best choice among the engines for the Apple Vision Pro. Apple’s own development environment is Xcode with RealityKit, but Apple explicitly supports Unity. Immersive applications require a Unity Pro license or higher. So far, Unreal supports the Vision Pro only experimentally.
2. Unreal Engine
Unreal Engine is known for its graphics quality and is often chosen for more elaborate projects that call for photorealistic visuals, such as architectural visualization or gaming. Unreal comes with a powerful rendering engine, so it is often the choice for projects that require high-end VR on PCs or consoles. Unreal also offers the Blueprint system, which lets developers without much programming experience build logic through visual scripting.
3. Which is better for VR?
The choice between Unity and Unreal depends on the requirements:
- Unity is an excellent choice when the application is designed for mobility, ease of use and broad platform support. It is especially well suited to quick prototypes. It is ideal for mobile VR projects because, from the start of the project, it gives you maximum control over the limited resources of mobile VR devices.
- Unreal is ideal for high-end VR experiences with impressive graphics and immersive environments. If a VR experience needs photorealistic graphics or is planned for high-performance PCs, Unreal is often the choice. Keep in mind, however, that VR support in Unreal is overall less mature than in Unity.
Conclusion
Both engines have their strengths. Unity offers more flexibility and is particularly well suited to mobile VR devices, while Unreal excels in projects that demand the highest visual quality. That said, both systems can deliver equally good results. They just take different approaches. The decision depends on the project goal, the level of detail required and the target platform. Ultimately, though, the deciding factor is which engine the development team knows best and for which system it already has usable prior work ready to go.
